A community-led ‘house-warming party’ will mark the official opening of a new gathering space in the South Frame - Evolution Square - this Friday from 4.30pm to 10pm.
Located on Tuam Street, between Little High Eatery and EPIC, Evolution Square is the third of four South Frame gathering spaces to be completed by Ōtākaro Limited. Vanguard Square opened in late 2016 and Mataī Common opened in June this year. Ōtākaro Chief Executive Albert Brantley says the name – Evolution Square – relates to its place in the Innovation Precinct. “Evolution Square is like a central-city living room. A place to sit, relax, enjoy the sun and meet with others. As with all gathering spaces in the South Frame, Evolution Square will also be available for events such as markets, food stalls and outdoor dining.”
Evolution Square includes paving, gardens and seating, mostly in the form of hot pink and grey bleachers which reference the colourful history of the area. “A group of upstanding wooden piles recovered from the Lyttelton Port are also a nod to the area’s industrial past.”
Little High Eatery Manager Kate Grater says Evolution Square’s neighbours have been busy preparing for the ‘house-warming’ event that will follow an official opening. “With the gardens and the hot pink bleachers, Evolution Square adds to the vibrancy of the area and we’re eager to make the most of it.” “The opening party will be a family-friendly event with free live music, great food, fortune cookies and a special virtual reality experience. Santa selfies will also be a feature of the night,” says Mrs Grater.
